Flossers 101

Random flossing removes annoying pieces of food stuck between our teeth; but proper flossing helps prevent cavities and gum disease.

Every day sticky plaque coats all sides of our teeth and hides under our gumline. Our daily goal is removing plaque from our mouths. Flossing reaches the spots our toothbrush can’t.

According to https://www.healthline.com/health/how-to-remove-plaque its best to floss before you brush!  They recommend:

  • Gently slide a taunt section of floss between your teeth.
  • Gently rub the floss in both a “C” shape and up and down motion against the inside of each tooth to loosen the plaque.
  • Gently rub the floss under and along the gum line.
  • Repeat with a new section of floss between the next two teeth.
  • Rinse with antibacterial mouthwash and brush your teeth.

What are the Best Flossers and Pics?

We recommend Oral/B Glide Pro Health Comfort Plus for general use. The wide and smooth design slides easily between teeth and is tough on plaque while gentle on gums. Keep a dispenser with you during the day for an extra floss.

For clients with especially sensitive gums we recommend Dr. Tung’s Smart Floss! Dr Tung’s floss has more surface area and a plaque grabbing texture, yet its stretchy design is gentler on gums. It has a fresh cardamom flavor which many appreciate.

For people who prefer “all natural” products Tom’s of Maine Anti Plaque Flat Spearmint floss is the go-to. It offers a broad flat surface and incorporates all natural waxes for ease of sliding between teeth.

We know it’s important to start good oral hygiene practices early with kids and flossing is key! We recommend Kids Plackers designed specifically for easy use by children. Plackers feature a dual grip handle, kid friendly flavor and an angled head for easy reach. The floss is designed to stay taunt and not shred. It’s treated with fluoride.

People with braces experience unique flossing challenges! Platypus Orthodontic Flossers are especially designed for braces. Platypus offers a spatula shaped head to slide between the teeth and wires, and another flosser tip to brush around brace brackets.

What About Picks!

We recommend G.U.M. Soft Picks with either straight or angled versions. We like the angled version for ease of use and better reach. G.U.M. soft flexible bristles remove plaque and massage gums. Picks are a convenient dental hygiene partner but not a substitute for daily flossing.
